Keeping your pet protected from the hot summer sun is just as important as keeping yourself protected. Although we only have a few months of beautiful spring and summer weather, it can get pretty hot in Buffalo. That’s why it’s crucial to make sure that your pet is kept nice and cool, especially when outside.
When you take your dog for a walk or anytime you let him/her outside, remember to cool your dog down when you cool yourself down to avoid heat stroke, sunburned food pads, dehydration, and more. We put together some tips to help you help your pet stay healthy in the heat:
- If you have a blacktop driveway, don’t let your dog lay on top of it. Asphalt heats up quickly and can lead to burning of the skin and foot pads.
- Make an appointment with the groomer to give your pet a fresh cut. This will keep your pet cool with much less fur or hair to deal with during the hot summer months.
- Have access to water at all times. It’s important to keep your furry friend hydrated at all times when you’re outside and inside, especially if your home doesn’t have air conditioning.
- When the outside conditions are high and dry or humid, avoid exercise or excessive physical activity with your dog.
- Have a pool? Let your furry friend take a dip! You can even turn the sprinkler on or hose them down with cool water.
- Never leave your dog in a parked car. The temperature inside the car can skyrocket, putting your dog in danger of having a heatstroke, or worse.
- Always find shade for your pet to lay under.
